Eskom is calling for inverters to be switched off and charging to be delayed when load shedding ends. An inverter and battery setup without solar is actually undoing the work of load shedding altogether, and may pose a greater risk to the grid. This is because of the load placed on the grid as the batteries draw power from the grid as soon as load shedding ends. This excessive load on the grid when the power comes back on is apparently undoing the battery charging can undo approximately 85% and 90% of load shedding in summer and winter.

The solution is to ensure that you have solar panels to charge your emergency power systems during load shedding and to reduce the recharging load. PV systems are also a good method to readdress the load shedding balance as they put excess power back into the grid.

The Conservation community have rightly noted that recycling plastic is not an effective solution for the relentless increase in plastic waste.
Plastic bottles, wrappers, single use plastic containers and bags are clogging up what is left of nature, and if individuals and companies continue to ignore this issue it will come back to plague us as our food and water supply are contaminated by the pollutants.

CUT DOWN ON THE PLASTIC.
*Use #filteredwater from the tap and stop buying bottled water.
*Buy unwrapped food items. This is still possible even at a supermarket, healthier too.
*Use recycled paper bags or reusable containers and bags.
*Stop using those thin disposable plastic bags to pack your fruit & milk in the shops.
*Only support & buy goods packed in glass, paper and card, avoid the plastic wrapped or plastic bottled items.
*Support local fruit & produce suppliers, butchers, bakeries and request that not plastic is used to wrap items. (butchers used to use brown paper or simply supply your own containers).
*Stop buying plastic wrapped fast food.
*Never ever buy plastic wrap again, use glass containers to cover & store leftovers.
*Make your own sauces, jams, yoghurt, etc. it's not difficult and healthier too. You can also use the glass bottles you saved as storage containers.

There are many ways to begin, but at some point, hopefully sooner rather than later, we really need the companies to take responsibility for their use of packaging plastic.
Without their help this irresponsible corporate profiteering will ultimately be the end of life as we know it. However, in the meantime you can stop supporting companies that use disposable plastic packaging.
